Program Overview
This first step is our introductory-level training program. In this training students learn how to think like an interpreter. It presents and addresses the core elements that professional interpreters need to be successful in the healthcare setting. Students in this program gain a clear understanding of the interpreter’s role and responsibilities in the healthcare setting and are prepared to develop their skills in part two of the training program: Act Like an Interpreter: Medical Interpreter Training Program (learn more about the second step in the training program).

Role of the interpreter
Code of ethics and standards of practice
Protocols and techniques for dialog interpreting
Research skills
Introduction to healthcare services and medical concepts for interpreters
Foundational skills presented and developed throughout this program include:
critical thinking
ethical decision-making
reflective decision-making
self-awareness and self-assessment
facilitating collaborative teamwork with other participants in the medical encounter
identifying gaps in knowledge and skills and strategies to close gaps
